ITF statement on Egypt

NACHRICHTEN Presseerklärung

The ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) is deeply shocked and appalled at the continuing violence and killings taking place during the current political unrest in Egypt, including attacks made on workers in their workplaces and the burnings of government offices and places of worship.
We condemn all killings both of civilians and of members of the armed forces and police, and support the call by the UN Security Council for maximum restraint. We urge a rejection of violence and the full respect for human rights.
We call on all parties to commit to a peaceful resolution of this crisis and to enter a dialogue committed to democracy and basic human rights, including guarantees for women’s rights, workers’ rights and the protection of religious minorities. It is important that trade unions should be participants in this dialogue for a future based on social justice and respect for human rights.
Bilal Malkawi, ITF Arab World representative, noted that: “The ITF is monitoring the situation with reports from our Egyptian affiliates and in close coordination with the ITUC and other Global Unions.”
