The initiative is part of an ITF action week taking place from 5 to 11 October 2015 that brings together road and rail unions worldwide under the slogan: 'Transport workers fighting back – Organising globally!'.
Some 30 road and rail unions, representing transport workers from Argentina to Zimbabwe, have pledged to take the 5 reasons, 5 photos challenge to help raise awareness, online and on the ground, of the benefits of public transport. The photos gathered on 5 October will be used at trade union and civil society events at the United Nations' COP21 world climate conference on 4-6 December in Paris.
Alana Dave, ITF education and climate change officer, explained: “Climate change is happening now. Millions of people are losing their livelihoods, their homes, their jobs – and many also their lives. Improving and expanding public transport can reduce emissions, create jobs, and improve air quality, safety and mobility. Unions worldwide have joined the mass fightback for climate justice. ITF unions understand that the time to act is now.”
