What is C190 and why does it matter to transport workers?
C190 is a groundbreaking international agreement from the International Labour Organization (ILO) that says every worker has the right to a world of work free from violence and harassment.
It was adopted in 2019, and it’s the first global treaty to tackle violence and harassment in the workplace—including gender-based violence.
Why is it important for us in transport?
Transport work often happens:
- In isolated or mobile settings (like at sea, on the road, or at remote terminals)
- At odd hours or across borders
- In heavily male-dominated environments
These conditions can increase the risk of violence, bullying, and harassment—especially for women, young workers, migrants, and LGBTQ+ workers.
C190 helps us demand real change:
- Stronger laws and protections in every country
- Proper reporting systems and support for those affected
- Clear rules for employers, including in subcontracted and outsourced work
- A zero-tolerance approach to abuse, whether from colleagues, bosses, or the public
What can unions do with C190?
- Push for ratification in your country
- Negotiate better workplace policies using C190 as a standard
- Train reps and members to spot and challenge abuse
- Support survivors and fight for justice
