THE TRANSPORT MOVEMENT

We build transport workers’ power.

Union Building aims at building strong, democratic unions with sustainable institutional capacity as well as organising, bargaining and campaigning capacity to underpin the ITF’s overall goal of building workers power.

WHAT WE DO

Organisations with strong institutional capacity enable union leadership to run a union in a transparent, efficient and sustainable fashion, and ensuring gender awareness and the development of young leaders as part of this. Union leaders of such calibre are in the best position to build organising and bargaining capacity, and to empower members for activism, mobilisation, and the fight for their interest.

Union building projects support the ITF’s overall strategic plan of growing workers power, are part of the operational plans of sections regions and departments, and are based on clear strategic target selection. They build new unions where there aren’t any yet, strengthen unions where they exist but want to become more powerful, or consolidate small unions into greater more powerful organisation.

PROJECTS & SUPPORTERS

The foundation for our work is the mandate from the ITF’s Singapore Congress.

Growing and activating membership, innovative campaigning and influencing global and regional policy are the three strategic directions for the current inter-Congress period. The four levers continue to support the work.

All our projects have clear objectives and are monitored very closely. They take place in Latin America, Africa, the Arab World and Asia/ Pacific and support the work of most of the ITF’s industrial sections, the women’s team and the youth team.

Many union building projects are supported by our partners, the Trade Union Solidarity Support Organisations.
