Workers around the world are facing attacks on their right to join and be active in their trade unions or raise their voice and act against the ongoing erosion of employment standards, including callous attempts to repress workers’ right to strike. The result is an increase in precarious work, poverty, inequality and unchecked corporate greed which have driven down wages and working conditions.
Workplaces are the front line in the fight for rights and democracy. Attacks on workers’ fundamental rights, together with the growing threats of deregulation, casualisation and other new forms of employment, are putting workers’ lives and livelihoods at risk. The ITF is confronting these challenges to the most fundamental rights of workers and ensuring that corporate greed cannot turn back the clock on our hard won protections.
Collective bargaining, the right to join a union and the right to strike are being eroded in too many countries. We will face down any attacks on trade unionists and continue to defend the rights of all transport workers.
The right to strike is a tool of last resort when employers refuse to negotiate or fail to uphold workers rights’ and conditions. The right to strike is enshrined in international labour law. Workers must have the right to withdraw their labour.
Despite unprecedented corporate profits over the last decades, wages have stagnated globally and have not kept pace with the rising cost of living. We continue to fight to secure decent wages and social protections that allow transport workers to support their families and live in dignity.
