Reinstate Said: Support grows for Moroccan union leader as victimisation continues

news 27 Feb 2016

Said, who is general secretary of ITF-affiliated Syndicat National des Travailleurs des ports/Union des Syndicats UMT des Transports and Arab World ITF regional chair, was dismissed by Somaport, the CMA-CGM owned operator at the Port of Casablanca.

An ITF/Labourstart e-campaign calling for his reinstatement and for an end to attacks on trade union rights at Somaport has attracted a huge global audience so far. Add your voice to the call for justice!

Said spent over three months in jail in 2012 on charges related to his trade union activities. He was released following a high profile global effort and continued to lead his union.

Workers in Somaport have faced intimidation through suspension and dismissal. Read more about the on-going dispute.

ITF regional secretary for the Arab World Bilal Malkawi said: “The trade union community is standing with Said, not just in this region but all over the world. There is recognition that the attack on him is an attack on fundamental trade union rights. Said is a dedicated and committed activist and because of that he’s faced years of victimisation and intimidation. Employers can’t be allowed to pick off leaders in the hope that they will break our unions.”
