The Federation's four member unions in Nepal have been intensely involved in the emergency response, mobilising transport workers – many of whom were themselves victims – to help with the rescue efforts and distributing tents to those left homeless.
The reconstruction of union premises is now a priority, so that unions can return to normal functioning and continue to represent workers.
Pledging a GBP10,000 (USD15,346) donation from the ITF, general secretary Steve Cotton has encouraged unions to pitch in. "Solidarity assistance is even more important now, at this time of rebuilding and resettlement. Our unions are focusing on reconstruction and need your ongoing support," he said.
Ajay Kumar Rai, president of the ITF-affiliated NETWON union, said: "We have not lost our spirit to overcome this and other challenges. We are proud of our affiliation to the ITF and the whole ITF global family. We are extremely grateful to all well-wishing individuals and unions in Nepal and abroad who have expressed their solidarity with us in this time of crisis."
