COP29

Baku, Azerbaijan

We are in a climate emergency. Around the world, we are seeing devastating floods and scorching heat becoming all too frequent, costing lives, livelihoods and futures. Through it all, transport workers are at the forefront, delivering lifesaving aid while keeping our societies and supply chains moving, and themselves dealing with escalating climate harms.

As governments meet in Baku for the  2024 global climate summit, COP29, the global labour movement is calling for urgent and serious action

With all eyes on negotiations over a new global climate finance goal, the ITF is leading the push for financing which makes international commitments to just transition a reality, and supports the sustainable and resilient transport we need to tackle climate change.

And at the sectoral level, we need just transition plans for the transport sector that protect jobs, develop skills, safeguard working conditions and ensure a central role for workers.

At the same time, with countries being called on to produce more ambitious national climate plans (NDCs), it is critical that action on the critical transport sector is tied to just transition, with a focus on jobs, skills and working conditions.

The ITF delegation will be taking these demands to all governments at COP29, led by the ITF General Secretary and including representatives from CNTTL (Brazil), CNTTT (Brazil), CONTTMAF (Brazil), NUMSA (South Africa), and TAWU (Kenya).
