The seafarers section of the ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) has made the following statement:

Transport unions from across Europe are meeting in Barcelona this week for the ETF (European Transport Workers’ Federation) congress.

Campaigners from several ITF unions made sure the views of workers were heard by public transport employers at an international meeting in Montreal, Canada.

Commenting on the adoption of the royal decree to ‘reform’ port labour that has just been adopted by the Spanish parliament (with 174 votes in favour, 165 against and eight abstentions), International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) president and dockers’ section chair, Paddy Crumlin, stated:

The ITF has welcomed an opinion by an adviser of the European court of justice (ECJ) that Uber is a transport company that requires a licence because it “exerts control over all the relevant aspects of an urban transport service … including its drivers”.

The ITF today launched a new campaign to give transport unions the tools to take on the secretive Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA), which has been negotiated by the European Union and 22 other countries.

ITF unions have sent letters of support after the authorities in Bermuda brought politically motivated charges against union and community protest leaders who have led a campaign against a deal to rebuild the island’s main airport.
